Question Reguarding Issue With JL W6 Subwoofer

So recently I installed a JL 10w6v2-d4 into my car along with the JL 500/1 Slash Amp. The subwoofer was purchased brand new. I have it in the Zenclosures box and I have 4 guage Rockford Fosgate Wiring in the car. The Subwoofer is wired the way it came when I bought it. I installed everything about 3 or 4 weeks ago and everything has been fine since last night. I start up my car and turn it up and I notice a weird sound coming from the subwoofer. When I turn it up, it sounds like a speaker is blown inside the car when the bass hits. I then got out the car and opened the trunk and turned the volume down to about 6 and it doesnt sound blown but theres a buzz noise/ slight vibration the whole time the musics on. When the volume is all the way to 0, there is no buzz or vibration. Anybody have any ideas or similar experiences? Btw, My amp is set pretty conservatively.

i am pretty sure i know what this is, on the back of your amp their should be types of filter switches play with those i believe there are three settings, pretty much this filter decides if your sub is going to produce just base or act as a speaker sometimes when the filter is switched it sounds funny.

if not then are you running a remote wire or direct connection to your deck?
if remote then your going to want to make sure you do a direct connection

sounds like you are sending trash to your sub...do you have an aftermarket headunit or do you have it rigged up with an inline converter on the stock hu...if that is the case turn down the gain on the inline coverter

Try resetting the gain on the amp.

Ok so I have the amp running with a separate remote wire spliced into the factory bose remote wire. I also have the signal sensing off on the amp since there is a direct remote wire. I am using the stock bose system and deck, and I used the JL Audio rca to speaker wire connection. It has RCA plugs on one side, and pre-stripped speaker wires on the other end. I have checked over the connections and they are all connected correctly. My guess is a voice coil is blown out, because when the bass hits, it has a little rattle/noise to it. The only thing I dont understand is how could that happen over 3 weeks with the 500/1 amp...

Hmmmm... W6v4. JL doesn't make those yet. They're on their second revision (W6v2). Is it a typo, or do you have a fake?

I finally figured out what is wrong. I checked my subwoofer today and noticed that the cone is separated all the way around. There is a hole in the foam all the way around. Im beginning to wonder if maybe the JL sub was a fake if there is such a thing?

Contact the seller and try to warranty it.

Foam surrounds can dry rot and get brittle with age. I wonder how old your sub is, even though it may have been unused.

You were probably just pushing it a little to hard. I had the same thing happen to a pair of 10w3v2's that I had hooked up to my factory head unit. They sounded good, but when i checked the speakers with the volume turned up they were at full extension.

I actually had them set pretty low. I just emailed the seller. The reason I purchased the subwoofer from them is because they offered a 1 year warranty with it. Here are the terms and conditions of the warranty.

"Our warranty will not cover blown voice coils or speakers damaged due to improper installation, or speakers with punctured surrounds. This is considered physical damage and is not covered by a manufacturer warranty, or by our warranty. "

I emailed them and told them how the whole rubber surround has cracked and came apart. They wrote back and asked how that happened, and pretty much said that they do not cover blown subwoofers or subwoofers with physical damage. According to their terms, I dont see how I am not covered, because the subwoofer doesnt have punctures, the whole rubber piece came apart. What are your guys opinions, am I SOL or should I dispute this? Keep in mind that this happened after 3 weeks of having the subwoofer installed, a 4 gauge rockford fosgate wiring kit was used, recommended JL 500/1 amp was used with the sub, and subwoofer was never pushed hard. I will post pics of the subwoofer soon so you guys can see for yourselves....

Can a JL 500/1 actually overpower a 10w6v2?

If driven to clipping, yes...

If you set your gains correctly, no.

That's a tough call, since it was installed it would be your word against theirs if you turned up the volume too high and tore the speaker. If you feel you did not do that and it surely is a defenct, and you used Paypal/Credit card I would do a dispute.
