Automatic Transmission: Drain & Refill vs Flush

Stats: 03.5 G35 sedan with 42M.

I want to service the transmission but not sure if the flush is necessary. Any insight?

- South Bay, CA Infiniti quoted $160 for Drain & Refill with Matic S.
- Van Nuys, CA Infiniti quoted $260 for the flush with Matic S.

drain and fill is useless.

do a full flush. regular transmission fluid flushes are absolutely vital to maintaining proper automatic transmission function.

Make sure when the dealer says Flush, it actually is a flush as in being hooked up to a machine. SOme are tricky in their wording of what is actually done

if you didnt go through the 30k, definitely get a flush now

you can do the flush yourself, drain the trans, its about 4qts, fill it ip with 4 qts, take the trans cooler line off the cooler and put it in a 4 qt empty oil jug, have some one run the motor, 2 qts of the old fluid will pump out in 10 seconds or so, add 2 qts, repeat this step a few time and the fluid color will change when the new fluid comes out. check the level and top it off if neede, good to go, thats how its done in the FSM too,

Castrol Import says it can be used where Matic J is recommended. But most here will likely tell you to use nothing but Matic J (now replaced with Matic S at the dealer.)

I was quoted $16 per quart for Matic S.

Id get nissan tranny fluid. I think they are pretty finicky about that. Not gonna risk it.

I disagree. The flushing machines can actually do more harm than good because these systems pressurize the transmission above typical pressures and can squeeze broken off clutch friction material into areas it shouldn't go. The fluid replacement procedure outlined in the FSM is exactly as MardiGrasMax described. That's how Nissan recommends you do a full fluid replacement.

What I did was buy 10 QTs of J-matic (apparently now S-matic) and did three transmission case drains (~3.1 QTs) over the course of 100 miles. This was done last year with about 60K miles on the clock. Now I will do a tranny case fluid replacement (3.1QTs) every summer or about every 10K miles. That should be more the adequate to keep the tranny happy. It's probably way overkill for most autos, but I auto-x/drag race my car so it does get abused more than most.

How hard is it to change the fluid yourself? i was just gonna get it done every 15k like you stated in another thread to cope with my driving styles. (i tend to floor it atleast once in the course of a day. a 50 year old woman probably doesnt lol)

When I do the atf drain, I get 4 quarts. You only have 3.1qts? Wonder why such a difference. I've read some getting 4 and some getting less than that. The first time I did the atf drain, it was spot on, exactly 4 quarts.



I did my second atf drain last week. I didn't measure it this time and just assume it's 4 quarts each time. Should of measured it. Oh well...

did a drain and fill on my 04 coupe a few weeks ago and at LEAST 5 quarts came out. I was surprised after reading on here most people only get between 3 and 4 out with a drain.

I immediately noticed improvements across the board with the 5AT after getting some fresh fluid in there... I may have been overdue

I didn't disconnect the tube that goes back to the transmission. All I did was, remove drain plug, let it drain about 15 or 20 minutes while I do other things and then jack up the rear to even out the drain.

I agree. I prefer the drain and fill vs a full flush.

I would do it myself though. It's not that hard and maybe $50 in fluids.

Amsoil universal synthetic ATF is also suitable for applications calling for Nissan Matic D, J & K. But if you're concerned about warranty, go with the Nissan juice.

This is something I should probably do, too.
