Anyone used anything other than Matic J or S?

2004 G35 Sedan 5AT 81k. I am going to do a flush and fill. I am considering using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF which I can buy at Auto Zone for ~$6-7 a qt. rather than paying $11 a quart at the dealer for J-Matic. According to Mobil 1's site it's good to use in place of Matic-J (see below). With all the warning labels about only using Matic-J I'm still a little worried (no warranty). Anyone else used Mobil 1 without any problems?

Also suitable for use in vehicles that specify the following fluid requirements:

* Audi G 052 025-A2, G 052 162-A1
* BMW LA2634
* Esso LT 71141
* ETL-7045E, ETL-8072B, N402
* Ford* MERCON*, MERCON V, MERCON LV
* All 2005 and earlier GM vehicles**
* Honda ATF-Z1*
* Hyundai SP-II, SP-III
* Idemitsu K17
* JWS 3309
* Kia SP-II, SP-III
* MAN 339F, V1, V2, Z1, Z2, Z3
* Mazda ATF-III, ATF-MV
* Mercedes-Benz 236.1, 236.2, 236.5, 236.6, 236.7, 236.9
* Mitsubishi Diamond SP-II, SP-III
* Nissan Matic-D, Matic-J, Matic-K
* Subaru ATF
* Toyota T-III, T-IV
* Voith 55.6335.XX (G607, G1363)
* Volvo 97340

There's Castrol Import ATF, Amsoil, and the Mobil 1 you just mentioned. They're all about $1-2/qt cheaper than Nissan ATF. I think you can get it for $8/9qt online somewhere, search around.

But IMO, I don't think it's really worth it to risk it just to save a $1-2/qt. On the other hand, if you want to be a guinea pig for the rest of us, go ahead.

Haha. Well if Mobil says it's compatable surely it must be. I can't imagine they want a class action lawsuit from 1000's of people with burned up transmissions after switching. I think I will just trust them and give it a shot.

I haven't heard of anyone doing this, just for the fact that the 5AT tranny has held up strong for most everyone and they recommend the Matic-J..now replaced by the Matic-S.

Let us know how it goes for you.

A flush or drain/fill? Unless you have the equipment, you won't be able to flush and replace all 10-11 qrts yourself.

And if this is your 1st replacement at 81k, I highly recommend going somewhere to get all the fluid flushed replaced.

Then you can do drain/fills every 10-15k or so.

Sorry I meant drain & fill. I bought the car at 72k and it has 81k now. I don't know what the previous history was. I am really just wondering if anyone else has used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in place of the Matic J/S. It says it's compatible so I assume it will work fine. Just would like to hear if anyone else has had any results with it.

I'd assume it would work okay also. My only point is, if it's the 1st drain (or if you don't know) get it flushed once.

Not in my area...the cheapest I've seen Matic J/S is $18! I saw Mobile1 ATF for $6. So I'd be saving $48 on just 4 quarts.
