Thoughts on Castrol Edge 5w30 vs. German Castrol 0w30 for my 05 Sedan?

SO I've been obsessing the past few days about oil for some reason. Anyway I've been over at bitog alot and searching through the UAO thread on my350z.com. I've come down to two choices and I'd like constructive input on each. I'm looking at the new Castrol Edge (which I can't find any hard data on as to whether its a group III or group iV) as well as the more expensive German Castrol 0w30 which is deffinitely one of the few Group IV oils out there. If you have input please keep it constructive. And please for the love of god don't tell me how great mobil 1 or royal purple are.

Oh yeah a little about my needs and driving habbits. I am looking to do a 10k mile drain interval on my car which currently has 70k on the clock. I romp on it about 1-2 times per day and the rest is granny driving with 90% or more of my miles being interstate/highway.

Castrol Edge I believe is the same group as Syntec so I never spent the extra bucks for it.

If your looking for 10k miles I would look at Amsoil Sig series, but idk if anyone has gone 10k on it, here is a 7.3k

Best thing is to do 5k then send a UOA, and then find out how much more you can go on it before you try for 10k

syntec is group III and from what I understand edge is most likely a group IV. Why no TBN on the spreadsheet or the analysis for amsoil?

From what I read the US Edge is a group III, the German Edge is IV. GC is very good.

You should run that and get a UOA with the TBN reading. And go from there.

I plan on it... where did you read that edge is a group III? I can't find anything regarding that.

Look up the MSDS

It says its 90-95% highly refined oil, so that makes it Grp III with 5-10% of Grp IV

according to BITOG

What he said. The GC is one of the few true synthetic oils (group IV base stock). Both are good oils, but the GC is better due to its stock. Either one changed at 5-7k intervals will work well. If the price is similar between the two, go with the GC.

Check out this link for more GC info.

German Castrol has a better quality basestock. The advantage of Edge, is the large additive package that assists in long drain intervals, that are characteristic of newer cars. If your going to change it between 5000-7000, I would stick with GC. If i was to stretch my mileage on each oil change, I would use Amsoil SSO. Only because the additive package is meant for longer oil change intervals. For the cost and protection, GC is very difficult to beat. Only oil I have seen get comparable results to the GC in the VQ are Mobil 0w-40 and Schaffers 5w-30, imo.

p.s. Been using GC on my 07 Z since the first oil change. If your going to use a long oil change interval, you should look into the new ultra pennzoil...

I'm wanting to get as close to a 10k OCI as possible. Edge claims a 15k interval but we all know claims are just a bunch of marketing bs. I would like to stick with something I can buy locally. Do you think GC would be better than edge for an extended drain interval? I should also say that since I put the turbocharged Z behind me my driving habits are much more subdued and I only romp on it maybe once every 50 miles or so. I average 23mpg if that tells you anything. 90% interstate miles too.

^^ Yeah, I would do that. I run my Amsoil 10,000km with a Wix filter and change the filter around halfway, but would be comfortable running it 10,000 mi with a filter change halfway as well.

the guys on bitog (yes I know many of them are similar to the morons that post misinformation over here) seem to thing that the mobil 1 tallfilter (m1-110) will go the distance.
