installed my test pipes tonite and...

well tonite i (actually my friends) got around to putting on my megan resatonated test pipes that i bought used from a local guy. after the install i started my sedan and immediately didn't like the sound. the flex pipe on them is leaking and you can definitely hear it and my stock muffler has too much back pressure. the sound is ok while driving on the interstate and at higher speeds (50mph'ish) but while driving slowly the sound just isnt good IMO. i'm really wanting my car to sound more sporty but with a nice sound. i dunno if another muffler will help of not. i mean i'm sure it'll help reduce the popping sound from the backpressure but, other than that i dunno how much it'll help.

do any of you have experience with exhaust wrap? i'm thinking of wrapping the test pipes with the heat wrap to kinda mask the leak in the flex part. i've never used the wrap before tho so i'd like input from those of you that have used it please.

this sounds kinda funny but, i love the sound of aston martins and maseratis. they have a really aggressive sound and it isn't like a european sports car. it's somewhat like a beefed up v8 but....better, deeper, throatier. i know wanting my G to sound like that is asking alot but, i really want a deep, growling sound. i've heard a sound clip of the HKS muffler but, i don't remember it sounding like i want. i'll check again on a few different sound clips but, everyone keeps saying that that exhaust sounds the best.

i've currently got just the megan testpipes, ichiba Y pipe, z mid, and stock muffler. i'm not sure exactly what exhaust setup i want to go with or what size now. i do plan on doing a few more modifications but, nothing major. i really want something that'll improve my low end power. i'm not going FI so i'm guessing i should stick with 2.5" piping. 3" max but, i think that may even be alittle much.

if anyone can give me some advice it'd be appreciated. i don't wanna dump alotta money into expensive hfc's or more testpipes is they're only going to sound funky. will another muffler make that much of a difference in sound? will the exhaust wrap help with the leaking flex pipe part of my test pipes? it isn't leaking really bad, i mean i can feel alittle bit of air coming out but not alot. any advice is great guys. thanks.

you can have an exhaust shop weld replace the flex pipes..they're gonna fail anyway, new muffler would do you some good.

that tanabe sounds ok but i want something more aggressive. something that really growls. i'm hoping this exhaust wrap helps take away some of the exhaust leak noise. does larger piping produce a better tone or is it all about which muffler pretty much?

3" piping will give you a deeper tone and growl...kinda gurgles like a honda lol..not many crazy setups for the sedan that sound wicked other than custom. Listen to the last few pages of the exhaust thread

Jae, is the G in the video ur car? May I ask your exhaust set up? thanks!

And OP, I think Im in the same boat as you. I think I may have a leak in my Megan test pipes also. I planning to put my cats back on because of it and because Im planning to get a Buddy Club axle back. If I left my test pipes in with my BC it would be too loud. And the smell is horrendous. Maybe if it were spring or summer it would be OK since I can drive with windows down. but with winter I gotta use my heater!!

Mine's pretty loud and that's with 2 resonators. I have:

MD V2.2 ART pipes
MD resonated XYZ
MD resonated mid
MD VQ TT axleback

Unfortunately if you want the MD mid and AB you'll have to find one used.

If your $$ is extremely tight have a muffler shop repair your test pipe (wrap is a band-aid) and buy a Magnflow muffler with 2.5" inlet. The combination of having your test pipe fixed and the new muffler should sound good...Gary

today i wrapped the flex pipe in heat wrap and it sounded alot better. i can tell the pipe on the pass side is alot worse than the driver side. i may rewrap it tomorrow and try doing the whole pipe instead of just the flex pipe section.

i know one problem is that my midpipe is too short. i have a z midpipe with a 6" extension welded on. i dunno why the hell people say you need a 6" extension when you really need an 8-9". i figured this out the hard way. i knew when i put the pipe on it was too short because i had to really work to get the end to reach the muffler. last nite when putting on the testpipes it was really a PITA. had to really stretch these exhaust pipe to get it bolted up and now my mid resonator is rattling on the underside of the car when it's cold. i wont be able to get it extended for a few days. i know that the stretching of the testpipes isn't helping the sound. i really hope when i get the mid extended and the flex is returned to normal (and not stretched) that the leak isn't as bad. i can only hope. i know my next set of pipes won't have the flex in them.

i'm still unsure which exhaust i'd like. some of the dual magnaflows have a sound similar to what i'd like and so did one of the single magnaflows. the guy had other mods that i can't exactly remember at the moment but, it sounded good. the tanabe sounds ok as well. i just don't know which one yet. i'd like to say i'm in no rush but, i really want my car to sound cleaner.

Best Sedan I've ever heard is SwivelHips... he's one of the mods. I can't remember exactly what he's running but I'm pretty sure it was a reasonably conservative setup that didn't cost a ton. Then again, I haven't seen him in awhile. He just blinged out his rotors so maybe he's got an all titanium setup for an exhaust now...

I'm a bit confused as to what you're trying to accomplish... Most people strap on TPs when they're looking for performance gains... not for sound. In fact, it's pretty widely known that TPs, resonated or not, are quite raspy and smelly... most who choose them while NA do so knowing they get that "sportier," higher note and a rugged amount of exhaust smell. FI eliminates the rasp but oh man! At what cost?!

You haven't said anything about improving performance except that you don't want to drop a bunch of money. You still have the stock muffler- creating backpressure.

The best I ever heard my exhaust while NA was with stock exhaust (including the cats) and the breather mods on the front- spacer, KN filter, Z tube. That is, if we're still on a budget.

Seriously though- if you're more of a bark guy than a bite guy... breather mods in and stock out would be worth a second look.

i've got the intake mods done already. really want the best of both worlds. i like the performance of the test pipes but, i want them to sound nice as well. i will probably get a few extra inches added into my mid since it is short. that should help the stretching of the rest of the exhaust. i'm still unsure of which muffler i want. as far as the smell, i don't mind it. i don't smell it all the time. the leaky exhaust is really what i hate. i may eliminate the flex pipe in the test pipes and just weld in some straight piping. while deccelerating i don't here a popping anymore. i heard it when i first put the pipes on and started the car but don't hear it now. the stock muffler may suit me well. i'm sure it is hurting performance but, the sound isn't bad. really if i could get the leaking flex fixed and the mid extended i'd be happy. i mean i do still want an exhaust that helps performance but, for me i don't know if a few extra hp will make up for an exhaust sound that i don't like. i'll definitely keep everyone updated on the situation.
