maintenance for g35: expensive?

Hi all,

I'm an aspiring G35 buyer. I'd like to drive a g35 for the reasons you've repeated thousands of times yourselves. the only thing that stands between me and the car now is maintenance fee. From some bodyshop technician I've heard that g35's maintenance rises dramatically after about three years, needless to mention that the initial maintenance fee is already expensive. I'm not jsut gonna take his words for that, of course, so I'm wondering if any of you experienced g35 driver can offer some guidelines. I'm looking at 7-8 years with my next car, so I need to be extremely careful. It just won't be worth it if i sacrifice my wallet for style.

Re: maintenance for g35: expensive?

Basic cars [Honda Civic] cost about 6-7 cents per mile for maintenance and repairs over the first 100,000 miles. AAA says the average new car in 04 spends $915 per 15,000 miles under warranty. Of course after warranty repair cost come into play such as AC, window motors/system, maybe transmission, suspension/shocks.

The G is pretty basic in gadgets. The 90-02 G20 was very inexpensive to maintain because of the low power and 2 liter I4 engine less performance less stress.

Everyone's standards are different and everyone maintains differently.

Yet 18" performance tires can cost 6 cents a mile alone and performance brakes can add another 5 cents per mile.

I could easily see a G35c driven hard costing over 15 cents per mile driven with proper fluid exchanges to increase parts longevity. $2250.

Over 267,000 miles and 14 years my 90 Q costs about 13 cents [$35,000] on 15" Michelin tires....similar brake wear every 20,000 miles.

The G is a 35K car. If you cant afford it, dont buy it.

The G35 was introduced as a 2003 model. There aren't any 3 year old G35s.

Re: maintenance for g35: expensive?

Dave above it right! No G's are over 3 years old so how would the technician know to make this comment! They are also under warranty for 4 yr. 60K miles. So there can't be any significant costs until after the warranty period.
We do know that brakes appear to need a higher frequency of replacement, so after the warranty runs out this will be a known cost. Also from what I have been reading on these forums, the power window motors appear to be blowing. So if they don't come up with an improved replacement motor, we can expect to be replacing these every 1-2 years (and at our cost after the warranty)!

Re: maintenance for g35: expensive?

I think he meant once out of warranty, and he'd be right.

Anyone actually priced the CD changer? Window regulators? Axles? Brembo rotors? a 6mt tranny? and those are just the common things.

Most everything on the G is shared with other Nissans (relays and such). Its going to be very reliable well past 3 years.

But there's no denying there are some items that will be kinda pricey. Some are expected with a sports car, others *may* be addressed with revised parts.

Regardless, nothing comparable to the G would cost less to maintain. Once you have it, you'll gladly budget for it. In fact, you may look forward to somethings (as sick as that sounds). Toasted your brembos and need $900 in rotors? StopTech time! Really tho, its a labor of love. Get one and dont look back.

Re: maintenance for g35: expensive?

Let's see...

-Premium gas (additional $.020/gallon) at 20mpg and 15,000 miles/year = $150.00/year more in gas over the regular unleaded price.
-15,000 miles per set of Michelin Pilot Sports = ~$1100.00/year
-25,000 miles per set of rotors/Brembo = ~$375/year
-Car care products = $100(+)/year (Zaino isn't cheap )
-Oil changes at $30 each (4 times a year)
-Transmission flush once a year ~$100.00
-Rear differential drain once a year ~$50.00

That adds up to ~$1995/year or ~$167/month extra above your monthly payment WITH THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY STILL INTACT. You also should consider the extra cost of insuring a G35 vs. a ___________. This could be several hundred dollars per year more depending on your age, marital status, and the type of vehicle you put in the blank space above.

Once the warranty runs out I'd bet you would probably average well over $2000/year with the standard 15,000 miles/year the average American puts on their car. These are definitely things for someone to consider when purchasing a "performance" oriented vehicle.

Re: maintenance for g35: expensive?

"i thought dealers give free maint. plans ? IE. oil changes.." Unless you negotiate that in I would say no. You will also go through brakes quite a bit too, they are at least covered until 36K. Personally by how much my car has been to the dealer (cd player, window motor, rear axle, brakes) in <1 year of owning it, I am definitely going to get rid of it right around 60,000 and get a new one.

When the brake pads get low you HAVE to change them, it's not like on other cars where the squeaking is moderate and only happens when you brake. It's nails on a chalkboard and it happens the entire time you drive.

You can always get pads and tires that will last a lot longer put regular gas in it and that would save you quite a bit, but then you would lose a lot of the performance you paid for.

The cost of new tires (even if you don't get michlin's) and how often I have to change them was the only thing that took me off guard. If you drive on balding tires though in this car you don't mind paying $600 for 2 new rear ones.
