another one of those Jack threads...

So I have a unique situation here, I just want to make sure I am safe. So I have placed my jack stands on the 2 frame rails before, but after some reading, it seems like that is an unsafe place. Now, I have the Y shaped jack stands, and if I cant put it horizontally to the car on the jack point indicated in the manual, b/c it would clip the side skirts, BUT if I put it vertically, it would totally avoid the bump that is meant for the stock scissor jack. Am I safe to just place it like that? Opinions, any insight will do. I NEED THIS TM!! Need to replace rack n pinion...

And what is wrong with using the frame? I always put mine up with the stands under the frame. Seems logical to me. Also, just so you feel better, when you have the car up all the way around, walk around and pull at the fenders - hard - if it falls, better then than when you're under it.

Should be fine placing it where you described. Give it a good shake when before you crawl under there to be safe. Another safety tip, slide your wheels under the car after you remove them, so if the car does fall it has something to land on besides your face.

Jack it

You can put the pinch weld into the "Y" if it fits or place the "Y" up against the weld. I always use my jack stand as a back up next to the stand, but have all the weight on the jack stands.

I would recommend placing the stand on the inside of the pinch weld. I feel that it's possible for the stand to slide outward from that position. On the G35 there is an actual bump just inside at the jacking points. I always place mine sideways in those spots so as to not smash the pinch welds.

That is not a frame rail. That is the bottom of the rocker panel. The frame rail is pictured. Behind that jackstand. If you have any question about where the actual frame rail is, look below and follow the length of frame where it connects to the front subframe, or where the suspension mounts to the unibody.

This is nuts, I dislike those little jacks for anyone working on their car...they're for emergencys only! With the cost of a floor jack at Harbor Freight that's what you should be using! Before working on your car find out where the frame rails are, that's where you place the floor jack and jack stands!

I like to use the scissor jack to get the car high enough to slip the floor jack under and jack the rest of the way

Scissor jack = Widow Maker

Use it only as a last resort.

Unless you feel lucky and like to live dangerously.

"Danger, is my middle name."

But really, get a floor jack, and leave the widow maker in the trunk.

I've seen some good gains in my pectoral regions pushing the car back up off me after the scissor jack.
Pros and cons imo

Yeah, when it falls on you, you can get a good pump.
