Question Clean generic air filter better than (slightly?) dirty OEM?

I have a brand new $9 STP air filter that I got for free with a purchase of other stuff. The (OEM) air filter in my G has not been changed in at least a year so I could replace it with the STP but ... for some reason I thought STP is not all that great.
Is a clean STP better than a year old OEM?

If you drive 10,000 miles or so, dump the oem and use the STP. The oem filters very well but the flow rate dimenishes when it gets dirty.

I use other an OEM filters all the time. I actually like the Purolator PureOne filter and the Napa Premium Air filters. Go for it, a year is quite long to keep a air filter in a car.

I was really dissapointed in the last napa gold filter I got. I found on bobistheoilguy that they recently changed the production facilities. The pleat where it met the foam was unevenly covered in the sealant they use. While it was still functional, it was certainly blocking areas where air could flowing around all sides. I looked around on here and found the Denso to be a great replacement to the OEM.

Not really a whole lot of flow on the edges anyway. Max flow is in the center while the closer you get to the wall, the slower the air flows. There is prob a 1/8 inch buffer zone where there is practically no flow around the edge.

With filters there is no magic recipe. You can have low delta flow, but low retention, while high retention filters also suffer flow higher pressure drop across the membrane. K&ns have low delta-p due to larger pore size and use oil as a band aid which does a great job of capturing dust and fine particles.

There really is no super filter though. Just get something that isn't gonna fall apart or let boulders through

Thanks everyone...just changed oil and replaced air filter yesterday. The STP air filter is not that bad after all...it has a metal frame around the pleats and looks and feels sturdy enough.

Anyways, I noticed that almost all of the little plastic pins that hold the intake parts to the frame are broken and do not really hold anything anymore. Does anyone know if and where one can get replacement pins?
Thanks.

Anyone have the Amsoil filter? I'm thinking of switching to Amsoil and ditching the K&N.

Been using amsoil dry filter since first filter change out. Less risk of fouling your MAF sensor.
