Just done Seafoam on my g35x - some concerns...

I've just done seafoam on my g35x. (40k)
I know some ppl on this forum wonder why bother doing it on 08, but I did it anyways since I've noticed the idle got a lot rougher and so on.

result is good I suppose.
Did not smoke as much as I thought it would, but I think it did the job.
I had a shaky steering wheel while idling on P,D or N, but it is much better now.
Also, although this might be one of those psychological effect, it feel MUCH more powerful.

Now, here are some concerns.

I knew that the Check Engine Light would come up after seafoaming, and it did. No biggie, since I can just run down to auto zone and have the codes deleted.

RPM is my main concern.
I used to have 600~700 rpm while idling, but now it is above 1000.
I've googled on post-seafoam problems and found out 2 possible ones.

1. fouled spark plugs
2. O2 sensor fouls

Could anyone verify if any of the 2 reasons can cause high rpm?

also, if I do have problems on O2 sensor, how do I fix it?
(I assume if spark plugs are bad I can just replace them.)

1 more question to add on...

at AutoZone where they will scan the codes, would it show which part has gone bad?
(either sparks or O2 senser?)

Have the codes checked to see what they are first.

When put into the crankcase (into your oil) there are some before and afters that show it cleans a little, but I would not use it.

I use quality oil, I wont have sludge or gunk. Additives = bad, all of them.

perhaps you haven't seen enough posts.

I'm not 100% satisfying with it, but like I said, it did the job up to some degrees.

how about some more research before dissing?

I've used Seafoam in the gearbox of my John Deere rotary cutter. Would not put it in the crank case of my car.

your idle will calm down, its just temporarily up and normal after seafoam cleaning. your seafoaming wont hurt o2 or spark plugs, especially when your car didnt smoke that bad(which means your engine internals were fairly clean to begin with)

The items your concerned about lead me to believe you may want a grounding kit. I dont have one (gonna get one soon), but I think that may solve your idle and vibration issues.

I dont think it has to do with the engine ...Just my first thought.

No offence and good luck with your results.

But...

Just something to think about.. If this stuff was so good and worked properly wouldn't all manufactures start to sell their own version of the product as a maintenance item?

For example you know something is real when the big manufactures all start using it.
i.e.
Seat Belts
Air Bags.
ABS Anti Lock Brakes
Vtech- Variable Valve timing technology
Xenon Headlamps
LED lighting
Carbon Fiber
Synthetic Oil
to name a few technologies that everyone in the business has adopted.

The risk/benefit of Seafoam just doesn't make sense. At best, any improvement seems to be minimal. At worst, you're looking at screwing up your engine.

Whats with the seafoam bashwagon? Anyway, you probably didn't harm anything. Just let us know what the codes are and we'll go from there.

BTW, if you're having idle issues you might wanna clean your throttle bodies. It seems to have helped a lot of members, especially considering the VQ produces more blow by that most motors I've seen.

I think that the only believable benefit of Seafoam is water removal, and even that might be dubious for all I know. When I've used it (tractor, farm implements) I drain the gearbox, add Seafoam and gear oil, run the gearbox and then drain completely. Then I add back the proper gear oil.

I think the bashing just comes from doing a bit of research regarding most additives and cleaners. For the most part they just don't hold up under scrutiny or common sense. I'm not trying to be snobby or anything. I used to use all sorts of additives until I researched them well (or smarter people than me explained them).

And the thing is, the OP was having some minor issues. He tries Seafoam and now has idle issues, engine codes to worry about, trips to AutoZone etc. Was it really worth spending money on?

The only additive I've ever had work was valve cleaner to stop valve tap in a used Pathfinder I had. I had one loudly tapping valve. Added the cleaner and it stopped within 5 minutes. Changes the oil and it never came back. I know that the tapping valve was an indication of other problems but the stuff worked as advertised.
