This from Yahoo Answers:

Dear Yahoo!:
What's the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof?
Heather
Crawfordsville, Indiana

Dear Heather:
Having just gone through the long and drawn-out process of purchasing a new car and asking that very same thing, we here at Ask Yahoo! felt uniquely qualified to answer your question. According to the helpful salesman at our local car lot, the difference is in name alone.
Of course, we all know you can't believe everything someone, especially a salesman, tells you, so we looked for confirmation. A search on "sunroof moonroof difference" promised to uncover the truth. Sure enough, the very first search result was a page of frequently asked questions from sunroofs.com, a site "devoted to public awareness and education about automotive sunroofs."

The answer?

"Sunroof" is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. "Moonroof" is a term created by Ford in the 70s, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.
Hmmm, so all moonroofs are sunroofs, yet not all sunroofs are moonroofs? We found further clarification -- "sunroof" is the term originally used to describe a metal panel that would only allow light or air in when opened. A "moonroof," on the other hand, is a glass panel that can allow light in even when it is closed (provided, of course, you slide back that nifty fabric-covered panel to expose the glass).

True sunroofs, those made just of metal, appear to have gone the way of 8-tracks in automobiles, and these days, most "sunroofs" are really "moonroofs" -- panels of tempered glass, usually tinted, that tilt up to allow a flow of air, or slide back into the roof entirely, giving the car occupants a brief but tantalizing glimpse of life in a convertible.

Seems like our friendly salesperson wasn't telling us quite the whole story...

Yeah the weight concerns me. You would think that Nissan/Infiniti would want to keep the car as light as possible. The only possible saving grace here would be a more linear powerband.

Wow the looks are growing on me...but that weight. Obviously Infiniti is aiming for luxury over performance.

I think even with the added weight the new G37 will greatly outperform the current G35 Coupe.

I can't wait to see the power curve on that new VQ37VHR!

The G35 is not a sports car, but a GT. If you want a sports car, then this is not the car for you. Some curb weights of other GT cars:

AM DB-9: 3968
BMW 335i Coupe: 3571
BMW 650i: 3814
Ferrari 612 Scaglietti: 4056
Ford GT500: 3920
Jaguar XKR: 3814
Maserati Coupe: 3682
Mercedes CLK550: 3720
Barring the obvious differences in horsepower, you can see the trend with GT cars...they are heavy. Performance takes a back seat to luxury features. While people are complaining about the weight, no one wants to forgo rear view cameras, heated seats, 9.3g hard drive, 11 speakers, etc. Get a true sports car like C5 or Cayman and call it a day.

While I agree with weight being the enemy... and a true sports car hovering around 3000 pounds max... but logically, I think we are all wondering how a similarly-sized coupe is weighing 200 pounds more than predecessors... inquiring minds want to know.

Note (doesn't look like anybody noticed) - it's not the rear-view camera... since it's not listed in the "Tech package" like in the sedan... hmmm....

Anyone noticed the weight distribution is 54/46 now. They're moving further away from the 50/50 balance. It is ashame. First they say 52/48 is better than 50/50. I wonder how they'll spin 54/46 now.

its due to physics...inertia will create the car at higher speeds to be near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. (i learned this in infiniti technical training)

the coupe has usually been heavier than the sedan. I use that excuse why I'm faster than most coupes lol

yes luxury is the coupes goal but the new 3.7L does have a lot of potential. I know from driving the 07 sedan the 36% stiffer chassis helps a lot in handling compared to my 06.... weight is up on the new coupe but it should achieve a lot more in performance and luxury (ill leave style out of my statement)

Why would you want 50/50 at speed when it's RWD? wouldn't you want more weight in the rear to give the rear wheel more traction? Also, all sport cars w/ great handling have at least 50/50 weight distribution or more weight the the rear like the mid engine and rear engine Porsches. But now, it's 54/46, so now, at best, it would be 52/48 instead of "50/50" of the last gen coupe.

And what happens when you have kids, but only need a rear seat a couple times a year and still want to have a good looking car that is almost as fun to drive as a lightweight sports car? Do we have to suffer over-laden, over-weight touring cars if we don't want to be seen in an Evo or STi? What options do we really have?

Heck, since there are so many luxury options, what about lightweight/performance options? Aluminum suspension bits, perhaps? An aluminum roof like the Evo MR would be great. Everyone loves to tick the sport packages -- what if that included lightweight components as well?
